The Berz Story

Where is Berz Flight Training located?

Berz Flight Training is located at Ray Community Airport (57D) on Indian Trail, between 27 and 28 Mile Roads. Visit the "Our Facilities" page for more information, including a map.

How much does it cost for instruction and aircraft rental?

Our aircraft rental rates range between $87 and $99 per hour, depending on the aircraft. The primary rate for the instructor's time is $40 per hour (for private pilot flight or ground training). The advanced rate for the instructor's time is $45 per hour (for instrument pilot, commercial pilot or training in aircraft other than Berz Flight Training aircraft). Pricing does not reflect the small surcharge we need to charge to offset the price of fuel. Contact the Berz office for more information about the current surcharge rates.

What methods of payment does Berz accept?

There is no deposit required to fly. At the end of each lesson, a payment must be made by cash, a personal check, Visa, MasterCard, or Discover. There also is a payment option where one can prepay for flight time and have a running account. Berz Flight Training also sells gift certificates for every occasion.

What is ground school?

Ground school is the bookwork of flying. The best pilots fly the best because they understand their airplane and the consequences of their actions. Ground school is also required to pass a written exam, an oral test for the checkride, and for multiple milestones throughout flying.

Why should ground school be taken before, or in conjunction, with flying?

Think about learning to drive a car by reading a manual. Without actually getting in a car and driving, there is no real way to fully understand it. To get the most of flight training you need to study and fly.

Why do pilots need a medical?

The FAA requires that a pilot be certified as medically safe to fly. As a student pilot, a medical acts as a student pilot certificate with an endorsement. This allows a student to fly solo. The requirements for a medical are very basic, and similar to a routine physical. They may be obtained from an approved aviation medical examiner. You can fly with glasses or contacts; the vision requirement is 20/40, corrected. Medicals are an average of $70. They are valid for three years, unless you are over 40, then they are valid for two years.

How does a recreational license differ from a private pilot license?

Although you usually can accomplish a recreational license in less time than a private license, a recreational license has many limitations to it. A recreational pilot may only have one passenger, cannot fly at night, cannot fly in controlled airspace where radio communications are required, or fly an airplane over 180 horsepower. A recreational pilot can only fly 50 nautical miles, unless further training is received.

What are the requirements for a private pilot license?

There are numerous requirements:

  • Pass a written exam
  • 40 total hours of flight time
  • 20 with an instructor
  • 10 solo hours, including 5 solo cross country hours
  • 3 hours of night flying
  • 3 hours for the checkride preparation
  • Pass a checkride which includes an oral portion and flight test

Keep in mind these are the minimum hours, which most pilots normally exceed.

How many hours does a pilot really need?

Most students need 80 to 90 hours. Usually that time is split between dual time and solo time. At least 30 hours of ground school is needed for the written and checkride preparation.

How safe are small aircraft?

Small airplanes are very safe. All of our aircraft are maintained to the highest Federal Aviation Administration standards. Flying is safer then driving a car on the road.

What are the implications from September 11th for general aviation?

There are special temporary flight restrictions (TFRs), for certain events. These include presidential visits, baseball games, football, and certain racing and sporting events. Pilots are also advised to avoid nuclear power plants, industrial centers, military areas, and dams.

What kind of weather can pilots fly in?

As a student pilot, all flight is taught by reference to visual flight rules (VFR).  The VFR minimums are at least 5 miles visibility and 3000 foot ceiling. The wind, rain, snow, and fog are other considerations. Also, every airspace has certain requirements.

Can I fly all year?

Yes, if the weather is suitable. While winter flying is vastly different from summer flying., it is perfectly safe, and the airplanes actually get the best performance during the winter.

How do I schedule a lesson

You can schedule your lesson by calling Berz Flight Training at 248-280-4701, or by using our online scheduling system. All lessons are made according to the customer's schedule, not the instructor's.

How often should a student fly?

Twice a week is an optimal number. It allows enough time for a student to study, while maintaining flight proficiency. Most pilots see that the more they fly, it easier it is, and it allows a steady training pace.
